Miscellaneous

  • Daniel and his wife Alice came to the US in 1892, separately. Before my mother and I had access to certain records, it was a long-held family belief that they came from England to make a fresh start after the death of their first son Richard. Nothing was known about Richard except that he had died as a baby. This belief changed when Ancestry.com released their US Passport Application database. I found the date of Daniel’s arrival and the name of the ship from Alice’s application and used that information to look up his passenger info. We discovered the following information as a result:
    • Daniel arrived separately from Alice. He arrived in August 1892 with Richard, listed as being just over a year old. We had had no idea that Richard had ever arrived in the US!
    • Alice arrived in November of the same year with their second son Walter.
    • I searched the Massachusetts death records and found an entry for Richard Trainor in Worcester, MA in 1893. I sent for that record and am still waiting for it.
    • I found actual images online free at New England Ancestors and from there, I was able to determine that Richard was born on 2 Mar 1891 and passed away on 5 Mar 1893 of bronchitis.

This has changed our entire theory of why Daniel and Alice came to the US. It was not to make a fresh start, but more likely to find better jobs. We may never know.

Research Goals

  • Obtain a readable copy of Daniel’s naturalization records. Our copy is very difficult to read.
  • Do more research into Daniel’s family. We have very little about his parents and siblings.
